Budapest, 6 June 2024 - Voters can cast their votes in the European Parliament, local government and minority elections on 9 June 2024 between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. at one of Hungary's 10 119 polling stations. Before voting, voters must provide proof of their identity and their address or personal identification card, which is included in their address card. Voting is only possible with a valid identity card, passport or driving licence. A valid photographic identity document issued by another Member State of the European Union may also be used as proof of identity.
In the European Parliament elections, voters can cast their vote at one of Hungary's 147 representations abroad if they have submitted their application for registration by 4 p.m. on 31 May. When voting at a representation abroad, voters need only prove their identity and do not need to present a document proving their address or their personal ID. Citizens who have presented valid identity documents and are included in the electoral roll may vote at the polling station. A new feature of the joint procedure for the European Parliament, local government and minority elections is that voters only have to sign the electoral roll on one place, after which the election commission will hand the ballot papers for each election for which they are entitled to vote.
It is important that the ballot papers for the minority election must be placed in the green envelope and sealed, otherwise the ballot paper will be invalid.
A total of 10 025 ballot papers were produced for the European Parliament, local government and minority elections. In the capital, voters can cast their ballot for the mayor of the capital, the mayor of a district, the representative of a single mandate constituency of a settlement, the list of the capital and the party lists for the European Parliament elections. This means that voters in Budapest will receive a minimum of 5 ballot papers, while voters of minorities in the capital can receive up to 8 ballot papers, as they can vote in municipal, regional and national elections.
In cities with county rights, voters can vote for mayor and municipal single mandate constituency representatives, in addition to the European Parliament lists. If you are a minority voter, you can receive 3 additional ballot papers - municipal, regional, national - in addition to the 3 above mentioned.
In municipalities with a population of less than 10,000 and more, voters can receive a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 7 ballot papers. Voters can cast their vote for the mayor, for the single-member constituency representative on the municipal shortlist, for the county list and for the party lists of the European Parliament. In addition to the 4 ballot papers mentioned above, minority voters in these municipalities can also obtain three additional ballot papers.
Voters who vote in Hungary's representations abroad or by post, or who have not applied to re-register at their place of residence, can only vote in the European Parliament elections and will receive only one ballot paper.
The counting of the votes cast will begin after the close of voting, after 7 p.m. For the local and minority elections, the National Election Office is expected to start announcing the results from 8 p.m., depending on the processing of ballot papers. In the case of the European Parliament elections, according to Article 344 of Act XXXVI of 2013 on Electoral Procedures, the official announcement of results may start after 11 p.m., as voting in Italy is still ongoing. The turnout and results of the 9 June elections can be found at www.valasztas.hu.
The NVI will publish the preliminary results data on valasztas.hu continuously, but given the large amount of data, it is expected that there will be a delay of 10-15 minutes between the time of data transfer from the backend system that aggregates the data and the actual publication.
