The NEC has set the date for the by-election in Budapest’s 11th parliamentary single-member constituency

According to the decision of the National Election Commission, the parliamentary by-elections will be held on 23 March 2025 in the 11th parliamentary single-member constituency of Budapest. The by-election was necessitated by the termination of the parliamentary mandate of László Varju.

Budapest, 09 January 2025 - The National Election Commission (NEC) has set the date of the election based on the recommendation of the Election Commission for the 11th Parliamentary Single-member Constituency of Budapest (hereinafter: ECSC).

In a single-member constituency, a candidates may run as nominees of a political party or as an independent candidate, or as joint candidates supported by two or more parties. Nominating organizations are registered by the ECSC in Újpest, where candidates must also submit their nominations 16:00 on 14 February 2025, the thirty-seventh day before the election.

To be nominated as a candidate in the single-member constituency, at least 500 voter recommendations are required.

The election campaign period begins on 1 February 2025, the 50th day before election day, and ends at the close of voting on 23 March 2025.

The by-election is open to voters who have an official address within the constituency. Voters can cast their ballots at polling stations within Budapest's 11th single-member constituency or at any Hungarian embassy or consulate abroad, provided they submit a request in advance. Applications for voting abroad must be submitted no later than 16:00 on 14 March 2025.

Voters who cannot attend polling stations due to a health condition, disability, or detention may request a mobile ballot box. Applications for mobile ballot boxes must be submitted to the National Election Office electronically, using electronic identification, by 10:00 on 21 March 2025. Alternatively, applications may be delivered to the relevant polling station commission by proxy or in person (without a proxy) until 12:00 on election day, 23 March 2025.

Voters with disabilities may request a Braille voting template by 16:00 on 14 March 2025 and may request an accessible polling station by 16:00 on 19 March 2025.

From 16 January 2025, applications can be submitted electronically at www.valasztas.hu or in person or by proxy at any local election office. Mobile ballot box requests can also be submitted electronically (without online identification) or by post to any local election office.
