The delegation of the Venice Commission visited the National Election Office

The Venice Commission, the advisory body of the Council of Europe, arrived in Hungary on March 25, 2025, to review the most important points of Act LXXIX of 2024 on the amendment of certain election-related laws.

Budapest, March 25, 2025 – The Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe decided at its meeting on January 30, 2025, to request the opinion of the Venice Commission regarding Act LXXIX of 2024 on the amendment of certain election-related laws.

The delegation of the commission, including rapporteurs Srdjan Darmanovic from Montenegro and Katharina Pabel from Austria, as well as legal advisor Michael Janssen, held discussions with the leadership of the National Election Office (NEO), including NEO President Attila Nagy and Deputy President Gergely Sóskuti-Varga.

During the meeting, the parties reviewed the restructuring of single-member parliamentary constituencies and the key aspects of the amendments to the electoral procedure law, including the automatic recounting of votes, the abolition of the mandatory envelope requirement for voting, changes to certain deadlines, and the abolition of the need for an address card for voter identification.
